Airflow |
for 2 string quartets
Duration: ~8'30"
Premiered: November 11, 2016 by the SFCM String Ensemble, San Francisco Conservatory of Music
I had never written a string quartet before, so I decided to write for two at the same time. This piece is also my first foray into minimalism. One of the first challenges I discovered was learning to compose around rhythmic gestures with minimal melodic content, typically existing in four note segments. Structure proved to be another key challenge. What ended up feeling most naturally composed was four distinct sections that abruptly changed pitch content, texture, and/or tempo, while still feeling organically formed between each section. When drawing out this form on paper, I noticed the shapes looked similar to an airflow diagram, hence the title Airflow.
