Rhapsody on a Spring Breeze
|
for chamber orchestra (1.1.1.1/1.1.1.0/timp+perc/2.2.2.2.1)
Duration: ~6'30"
Premiered April 29, 2013 by the Monocacy Chamber Orchestra at Lehigh University; Paul Salerni, conductor
The title of the composition is taken from the melody that inspires the middle Allegretto section. It is based on one of Taiwan's beloved melodies, whose titles translates to "Longing for the Spring Breeze." Like much Eastern music, Rhapsody on a Spring Breeze makes full use of the pentatonic scale. The opening chords in the string section are a pentatonic scale derivation that appears in various moments throughout the piece. While inspired by the sounds and sights of my father's home country Taiwan, I consider my compositional voice to be purely American sounding - this piece is a fusion of my heritage and my American upbringing. I also sought to show my love for jazz harmony by combining it with traditional orchestration.
