I'm so excited |
for soprano, flute, bass clarinet
Commissioned by Naomi Columna
Duration: ~5'30"
Premiere: Naomi Columna's Graduate Voice Recital, San Francisco Conservatory of Music, May 15, 2019; Seung Jeon, flute; Davis Hampton, bass clarinet
This song was a long-desired collaboration with my dear friend and soprano Naomi Columna. The title I’m so excited comes from a familiar phrase so frequently used for the sake of self-promotion. I personally always feel some timidness when I promote my own upcoming engagements, and I sometimes cringe sympathetically when reading others do the same. To openly express one’s excitement is an odd feeling to translate into premeditated words. Regardless, Naomi and I chose to “research” the online presence of various celebrities, colleagues, and friends, which ended up being an excuse to be on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter more than I wanted to be. Ultimately, the texts we chose were altered or abbreviated to protect the privacy of these people.
In keeping with Naomi’s unique spirit, she was adamant about not having a standard art song instrumentation of voice and piano. The agreed-upon choice of flute and bass clarinet yielded a tender, sweet combination that resulted in a sound that reminds me of a quirky indie film with a heavy tablespoon of Sondheim. Through our several workshops and brainstorming sessions, Naomi and I discovered a new perspective on how we view society’s way of interacting online and the array of emotions experienced from both perspectives of self-promotion. It’s a refreshing reminder of how art can give us the capacity to reflect on seemingly trivial things.
